iPhone 15 Pro expected to launch in September with 8GB RAM, A17 chip, and ultra-thin bezels
In the latest development from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is set to launch AirPods Pro's case with USB-C charging. The release will likely be in tandem with the iPhone 15 lineup launching in the fall. This upcoming shift to USB-C charging for the AirPods Pro is in sync with the rumored switch from Lightning to USB-C across the iPhone 15 series.
In March, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted the AirPods Pro's second generation release with a USB-C charging case later in the year. Kuo's report, though, did not mention any hardware changes in 2023.
Gurman also reported that Apple is poised to introduce an innovative hearing test feature to the AirPods Pro, which will help detect hearing problems. The feature comes as part of other novel AirPods capabilities arriving with iOS 17.
This development indicates that Apple is already looking into further advancing health sensors for the AirPods in the future. One of the potential sensors is the ability to read body temperature through the ear canal – a more accurate technique than reading temperature through wrist-based wearables such as the Apple Watch Series 8 and Ultra models.
Lastly, the Bloomberg reporter noted that Apple is reportedly exploring ways to utilize existing features in AirPods such as Conversation Boost and Live Listen to better position them as a hearing aid. While neither of these features has secured regulatory approval, Apple has allegedly hired engineers from traditional hearing aid makers to advance in this burgeoning market following last year's FDA's relaxed hearing aid purchase rules.
